Research Scholar Program

Relying on the university’s rich educational resources and high-quality faculty, the Research Scholar Program of Peking University provides a top platform for international applicants with enthusiasm for scientific research to cooperate with professors at Peking University. The Peking University library, electronic resources and various facilities are accessible to research scholars. The application is open all year round.

 

Application Prerequisites

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens under the age of 55, have attained a doctoral degree or have the title of Associate Professor or higher. Any particular requirements in term of health should be informed in advance. 

* Admission will be determined by your proposed colleges or departments according to your academic achievements. Most successful candidates have established prior contacts with the professors in their particular fields; anyone wishing to come for a Research Scholars is strongly advised to find a supervisor in advance.

 

Fee

Application fee: RMB 400. The following payment methods are accepted: Cash; Union pay card swipe payment; Online payment

* Other currencies and traveler’s cheques are not accepted. The application fee is non-refundable; Applications without an application fee will not be accepted.

Research fee: 3,320 RMB/Month

 

Application Procedures

  1. Online Application

Log in to the Peking University international students online application system (http://www.studyatpku.com), fill out the application form.

2. Deliver physical application materials

  • Research Scholar application form: please print, attached a photo and sign the application after successful online registration.
  • Original or notarized certification of highest degree attained, and official academic transcripts (in Chinese or English)
  • Two letters from your referees. The recommendation letter must be original documents either in Chinese or English.
  • Research proposal (no less than 1000 characters, in Chinese or English)
  • One photocopy of your valid passport’s information page (passport type must be ordinary)

Note: Two copies of the above application materials are required, one original one photo-copied. Your applications documents will not be returned. Applicants with incomplete application materials will not be processed.

 

Schedule

Research scholars enjoy flexible application dates and duration of research. The applications can be submitted anytime in spring or fall semester (except of legal holidays), and duration of study may be 1 semester, 1 year or a few months. Applications should be submitted at least 3 months prior to the date of enrollment. Normally it takes 4 to 8 weeks to get the Letter of Admission after the application submitted.

* The specific time of enrollment is subject to the Admission Notice.

 

Medical Insurance

Peking University’s regulations require that all international students must be medically insured throughout their entire planned period of study. Students are required to purchase the Comprehensive Insurance Plan of Foreign Students on the day of registration. Students who do not have valid medical insurance will not be allowed to register.

 

Accommodation and Catering

There are different types of housing facilities for international students at PKU. For housing information, you can visit http://pkugv.pku.edu.cn. For specific inquiries please contact (86-10)-62752288. Self-funded students may find their own accommodation on and off campus.

Students will receive a Peking University campus card (ID card) upon registration and may use the card in on-campus dining halls, library and other facilities.

 

Visa

Students admitted to PKU should apply for a visa at the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their respective country with the letter of admission and JW202 form. International students who intend to study in China for over 6 months are required to obtain ‘X1’ Visa, which will only be valid for 30 days after your arrival in China. Within 30 days of entry, students must apply for a residence permit at the International Students Division in order to obtain a legal status in China. Study period within 6 months are required to apply for X2 visa.
